Performance Tuning — it's as Much Old School as it is Modern

Performance Tuning for Today’s Vehicles
Since the first vehicle rolled off Henry Ford’s assembly line and the first avid car fan slid behind the wheel, there has been a concerted effort by individuals to extract as much performance as possible from their vehicles. Sometimes the changes were not necessarily significant but vital for engine performance, and the old style mechanic achieved this with his handy tool set, a good ear, and feel for the vehicle. The results could be astounding and for many it was a labor of love.
Tuning the carburetor, adjusting the spark plugs, a new air intake system, and small changes made all the difference in engine performance then, and in a lot of ways they still do. As vehicles grew more sophisticated the parts changed but the tricks of the trade for performance tuning did not.
Performance tuning for vehicles manufactured after 1990 has become significantly more interesting and technical. Car performance is controlled by a computer chip and each car to roll off the assembly line has the same settings, those designed to comply with emissions, fuel economy, and other mandates. As fuel efficient and competitive as these chips may be, they are not set for peak engine performance. Instead, they are designed to cater to the requirements of the average person who would use his car only as a means of transportation. They’re also calibrated keeping in mind some other things such as regional emission standards. This means that the rare power users of those vehicle were left to fend for themselves. This considerably complicated the task of performance tuning, at least at first.
Performance Tuning for cars of today usually includes changing out the car’s chip, power module, changing up the air intake, and changing up the exhaust system as well, and other little modifications that elevate a car from a mere means of transportation to a high performance thrill ride.
To sum it up, it is the traditional method with the added twist that a computer chip with performance tables can do that help mechanics and their hours of tinkering and tiny adjustments achieve results like never before.
